CONTEXT
There”s a
reason why we
don”t teach algebra
to first-graders. They have
to learn arithmetic
first. Advanced SKILLS can
acquiered only after
a foundation is
laid. Similarly , visual aids
are of no
value to a
sight – impaired student. What good
is a video
if you can”t
see it ? Every student
lives in a
unique world. The way
in which he
or she approaches
a subject will
be coloured by
prior learning , economics , physical and
mental aptitude , geography ,
nationality , family of origin , and
many more influences.
This
principle may seem
simple in THEORY,
but how about
the PRACTICE ? Learning how
to present “ user—friendly “ truths
takes discipline. Find out
where your students
are. How will you
link what they
“need to understand “ with what
they already understand ? It”s entirely
possible to make
our school buildings
accessible to make
our teachings inaccessible. Barriers to
real learning must be
removed. Creative methods must
be employed. When you
build the learning
house in familiar
surroundings ,the student
will be less
likely to get
lost on the
journey.
Remember
that a text
without context is
merely a pretext.

HOW KIDS LEARN
STUFF ! ---Dennis the Menace
